Anne-Marie Downes

Research Consultant

Career History

Research Consultant Anne-Marie joined us as an intern having just finished her MA in Cognitive Studies at the University of Sheffield. Her lab dissertation examined how experimental methodologies impact cortical blood flow responses in mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease. She spent the summer of 2019 interning at BBC Studios, helping the Formats Sales team sell formats such as Bake Off and Strictly to be remade in other countries. Before that, she did her BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Worcester College, University of Oxford, focusing on how modern democracies can use technological innovations to improve public debate during referenda.  She was Vice-President and Treasurer of the Worcester College Junior Common Room (Student’s Union), managing a substantial budget and liaising between staff and students (difficult in a year of staff strikes and tuition fee raises!). She is a freelance writer.

Anne-Marie has a strong background in data analysis, basic coding (MATLAB, HTML) and writing, with a particular interest in sustainability research and business strategy. She has been supporting us with our website update and marketing. She has also been working on research and consulting assignments – conducting and transcribing interviews as well as proofreading.

Outside of work

Anne-Marie enjoys hiking either in the Peak District or back home in Northern Germany, as well as baking bread and making miniatures out of clay and wood (which she shares under @miniatureconcision on Instagram). She enjoys comedy and has spent summers volunteering at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Interesting fact

1) She once gave a speech in the House of Commons.
2) As a baby, she was gently bitten by a lion cub. This unfortunately did not endow her with any leonine superpowers.
